2005 marked the 25th Anniversary of the release of Negativland’s first album, and we decided to stick our collective head deep into the copyrighted sand with this one. NO BUSINESS is not only a term Negativland’s accountant can identify with, but is also a tenaciously pure attempt to make new music out of old, or old music out of new, whatever anyone cares to decide this dubious case may be. NO BUSINESS may be a race with Walt Dizzy to commit legal suicide, or this elaborately packaged multi-media project might contain the most thoughtful cut-up novelty record you’ve ever heard.

Negativland clipped, transformed, and re-imagineered all the found sound they could get into their computer, and out came NO BUSINESS. It’s in a deluxe 5 x 11 inch die-cut sleeve that comes with a laff-a-minute full-length CD tribute to stealing on the internet, file-sharing, jamming popular culture, nose cream and one very insistent piece of pie. It also comes with a 56-page essay about the cultural public domain which isn’t one bit funny, just for contrast. And then, just when you’re getting all serious, there’s even a very special rubber novelty device - a trademarked Copyright Whoopee Cushion included in every package. You can also view a computer compatible video short which utilizes one of Negativland’s old chestnuts of criminal music, "Gimme The Mermaid." This very infringing video was made working with a now former Disney animator using Disney’s own computers to create and render it after hours when they weren’t looking.

If you’re a copyright lawyer, you’ll want to hear this, see this, and read this as soon as possible. If you have no respect for music or the music industry, this project will confirm your suspicions.
